La primera vez que los niñ@s se enfrentan a un papel y un lápiz juegan intuitivamente a observar lo que sucede.
Surgen así sus primeros garabatos, poco a poco van dominando el trazo que les permite pintar y más tarde escribir. A medida que van avanzando el garabato se convierte en un símbolo o dibujo, signo o letra.
La etapa del garabato surge entre los dos y cuatro años. La primera etapa tienen el nombre de garabatos incontrolados, luego más adelante los garabatos controlados y para acabar el garabato con nombre.
Algunos de nuestros niñ@s acaban estando en la etapa preesquemática ( de los 4 a los 7 años) el niño empieza a elaborar esquemas en sus dibujos. Por primera vez quiere reflejar alguna cosa. De lo que por primera vez el niño siente interés es por la figura humana, y la manera en que lo representa es en lo que se llama » capgrossos», que muchas veces es una cabeza donde salen dos piernas largas.
